Alsace & Lorraine
With its strategic position on the Rhine between the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forrest, this now tranquil region of France has been fought over by the French and Germans for centuries, in fact the region has changed nationality four times since 1871. The cemeteries of Verdun are a poignant reminder of the most bloody conflict between 1916 and 1917 when a million soldiers were killed in almost a year of continuous fighting. Much of the regions attraction today comes from its cuisine, wine and charming fortified towns and hamlets. A great way to explore is to take the Alsace Route du Vin which meanders for 110 miles through the wine country.
