The citadel of Carcassonne is a fully restored medieval town, thoroughly deserving of its World Heritage status. Throughout the year the walled citadel hosts themed and musical events ranging from heritage car rallies to medieval jousting tornaments and the 14th July fireworks display “la nuit du feu” are just incredible.
Jammed with arts and craft shops, terraced garden bars and restaurants it's well worth a stopover to explore the town fully.
