Franche-Comté

The Franche Comte is an area of outstanding natural beauty with opportunities for trekking, cycling and touring holidays through the forests and alpine foothills. In the winter, the area also has some popular ski resorts. The principlal town is Besancon which lies on a horse-shoe meander in the river Doubs and has been a strategic military town since Caesar. The old town is a charming 17th century maze of streets and needs to be explored leisurely on foot. The Citadelle at the top of the hill is especially interesting and worth a visit.
